Food

1. Introduction

This is a game to learn food vocabulary. The aim is to practice English words about food, food quantification and simple food request phrases.

There are a total of 180 food words divided into 9 groups. Each item is visually presented with pictures and has audio tracks for listening practice. While 180 items may seem like a lot of vocabulary, there are certainly some common vocabulary items that are not included and there are countless variations that students may also encounter. With that said, the aim is to have a fairly comprehensive vocabulary with the aim of providing enough vocabulary for students.

The game is divided into 3 parts. In the first part, you are presented with pictures of foods and you have to sort them into groups according to the quantities they use. For example, 'apple' takes the quantifier "an" while "beef" takes the quantifier "some". Often the quantification is not clear, for example watermelon can use 'a' or 'some' depending on the circumstances. For foods like these, the image is intended to be clear about which quantifier is best suited, for example a picture of a watermelon showing segments of the fruit indicating that the quantifier some should be used. The latter groups involve more complex quantifiers, such as a bag of or a slice of. These can also be quite complicated, but again, the picture should make it clear which one to use.

The second part deals with a shop. Customers enter the store and request specific foods. Then you have to click and drag the correct food to the customer. As you do this, you accumulate coins that count towards the final score. The idea is to serve as many customers as possible to make as much money as possible. Part 3 is a simple sentence creation task. Students must look at the picture and then click on the words to form a suitable sentence.
